Context

For a successful career it is a prerequisite to develop one´s individual strategy pro-actively and as early as possible. Although the routine of our daily work usually keeps us from pausing for a moment, it is pivotal to set some time apart for exploring one´s individual professional profile and for being able to plan each of one´s career moves in a conscious way. Being aware of one´s personal skills, competencies, and values is essential for defining and achieving goals, making informed decisions and exhausting one´s full potential.

Every scientist needs to figure out her/his own distinctive career path tailored to meet her/his goals. Both career and success can only be defined individually. One of the career possibilities a scholar has on completing her/his dissertation is to stay on at university and work towards a professorship. It is a fact that
universities produce far more graduates than they could possibly ever employ. It follows that one’s professional future may not lie in academia but in the public, private or health sector. Additionally, the balance between family and career may be an important factor to be considered in building a career.


Content

In this workshop the focus is on the elaboration and conscious perception of one's own abilities, competences and values. This is done in close cooperation and by expert support of the trainer as coach and the participants.. Based on the peer coaching approach, the participants develop an awareness of their individual and the others potential and particular resources.

Through change of perspectives and the various possibilities for exchange and feedback, the participants can collect ideas for further career strategies.

  • Compilation of an individual life profile (biography work before the workshop commences)
  • Dialogue/Story Telling about one's own life profilein pair work
    • Identifying relevant situations and stages
    • Figuring out the main theme of the own biography
  • Development of the individual core skills (academical, methodological, social and personal) 
  • Defining the personal core values (directly relatedto the set of skills)
  • Getting a general overview of possible strategies and career options (positions in i.e. science management, science communication, universities of applied scienes, options in the private and the public sector, consulting, management, leadership, etc.)
  • Developing a vision of life
  • Building a plan A/plan B strategy
  • Getting to know the high relevance of the career factors self-marketing and networking (Buzz word: Visibility!) for professional success
  • Impulses and feedback on your own career planning
    • triggering self-efficacy, pro-activity and intrinsic motivation

Dr. Silke Oehrlein-Karpi ist Coach und Trainerin für im Wissenschaftsbereich tätige Personen. Sie war selbst mehrere Jahre als Führungskraft in einem wissenschaftlichen Institut und Teilprojektleiterin in einem Sonderforschungsbereich tätig. Sie hat langjährige Erfahrung als Referentin und arbeitet u.a. mit verschiedenen Mentoring-Programmen an deutschen Universitäten zusammen.
